Martin Gantman: Empire
Empire durchbricht den Nebel der Rhetorik rund um das Thema Globalisierung, um eine lebendigere Darstellung moderner, kultureller Realitaten zu entwickeln und zu prasentieren.
Das Projekt bemüht sich, in einer erkennbaren Weise die scheinbar widersprüchlichen Ziele von wirtschaftlicher Leistung und Nutzen für den Menschen zu portratieren. Zunachst wird Davos (Schweiz), wo jedes Jahr das World Economic Forum abgehalten wird, als Hauptstadt eines wirtschaftlichen Imperiums dargestellt, so wie Rom einst Haupstadt eines Imperiums gewesen ist.
Nach dieser anfanglichen Darstellung, bei der die Globalisierung als semi-koordinierte Anstrengung von interessierten Instanzen vorgestellt wurde, wird das Phanomen spater weiter gefasst, da die Wirkung der zusammengesetzten Energie der einzelnen Entitaten auf ein gemeinsames Interesse ausgerichtet war, und ich begann mich einfach auf die Elemente zu konzentrieren, die von globaler Metamorphose zeugen.
An dieser Stelle jedoch und angesichts der jüngsten und andauernden globalen wirtschaftlichen Notlage, denke ich, dass sich vielleicht das Konzept einer Konzentration von Energie zu einem Zustand des Ungleichgewichts oder der Fragmentierung aufgelost hat. Das soll nicht heißen, dass sich die sozio-okonomische Welt nicht weiter aufbaut, oder dass es nicht noch machtigere Gebilde und Einflüsse gibt, die in die Richtung einer Agenda der wirtschaftlicher Zentralisierung und Kontrolle drangen. Aber damit sei auch nicht gesagt, dass diese speziellen Einheiten, die wir gerne als Wissende um die weltliche Interaktivitat ansehen, wirklich die Oberaufsicht innehaben.

Empire strives to break through the fog of rhetoric around the issue of globalization in order to construct and present a more vivid representation of contemporary cultural realities.
The project strives to portray in a discernible way the seemingly contradictory end goals of bottom line economic performance and human benefit. At first, centered on Davos, Switzerland, where each year the World Economic Forum conference is held, the work projected, as a device for representing the above ideas, Davos as the capital of an economic empire, as was Rome its empire's capital.
After that initial portrayal, where the event (globalization) was envisioned as a semi-coordinated effort of interested entities, the phenomenon was later seen more broadly as the effect of the composite energy of entities predisposed toward a common interest; and I began to concentrate simply on the elements that testify toward the global metamorphosis.
At this point, however, in light of the recent and ongoing global economic distress, I feel that perhaps the concept of a concentration of energy has dematerialized into a state of disequilibrium or fragmentation. That is not to say that the socio/economic world will not continue to synthesize or that there are not still powerful entities and influences that are pushing toward an agenda of economic centralization and control. But that also is not to say that those particular entities that we like to see as having a sense of world interactivity really do have that oversight.
