DRY TIDE is an ongoing series, taking place in various international locations and spaces. Like a recurring tide, each show will be manifested in different permutations, with an evolving roster of artists in each show.
Kicking off the project, the first show takes place in a found space in two rooms, facing Rosenthalerplatz, in the centre of Berlin. At Rosenthaler 71, Mitte is a building which currently houses the BBK studios and is slated for demolition. This exhibition marks the current transition of the area within the context of its historical background as a centre for Berlin at the turn of the century and its more recent position as the hub of a changing art scene.
The second show takes place at Garden Party, located near Frankfurter Allee. Formerly TamTam gallery, the space is now a project space run by two artists.
This exhibition proposes to present works that engender qualities relating to the retreat of a tide, whether through its relation to recent incidents relating to disaster, time, erosion, elemental materials and/or kind of return of sorts, or a cyclical and ongoing movement. Tides form in relation to gravity in the moon, the earth and the relationship to the sun. The show gives us pause to think back on the history of art and its relation to contemporary art. What factors, whether economic, environmental or social influences both globally and locally, influence their production? What lineages can be traced? What intercultural links are present in the works that are easily overlooked?
