The Embassy of Ireland presents small field exhibition tour with artist Aleana Egan and curator Melissa Canbaz as part of the Cultúr Salon series – a space to find insight and share ideas around Irish culture. The small field exhibition is taking place in Künstlerhaus Bremen from the 8th of May until the 20th of June 2021.In small field Aleana Egan creates a setting of abstract sculptures that are assembled in multilayered constellations. Materials such as metal, wood, pigment, and fabric refer to their own properties, while also remaining indeterminate: In this ambiguity, the objects evoke immaterial moments—ideas, thoughts, feelings, moods, energies, and relationships both towards each other as well as interpersonal. Manifested in form, the internal is turned outwards.
Translated into sculptural gestures, latent allusions are made visible, and the processual shifts into focus.The exhibition situation is a field once opened, remains in motion. Throughout its entire duration small field is accompanied by contributions in the form of posters, thus initiating an additional field of dialogue. The Affiche series addresses the sculptures‘ tentativeness and expands the physical exhibition space by extending it into public space. Affiche features poster contributions by Mihaela Chiriac, Sofia Duchovny, Hella Gerlach, Manuela Leinhoß, Vera Palme, Kirsten Pieroth, and Nora Schultz. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication.
About the speakers:
Aleana Egan (*1979, Dublin, Ireland) uses a variety of materials to create sculptural gestures and installations which can take the form of slender, fluid works and a more densely concentrated constellation of forms. Often, the sculptures are expressive whilst using a language of materials and artistic technique that is sparing. These materials such as various metals, cardboard, concrete, wood, pigment and fabric are incorporated into a practice which comes from an intuitive as well as an intellectual place and which plays with the materials’ qualities; how they curve, hang or sag. More recently works are made up of constituent parts, each forming a social relationship with the other. Melissa Canbaz is a writer and curator based in Berlin. Currently she is the interim curator of Künstlerhaus Bremen. She is also the co-founder of the project space STATIONS in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Previously she has worked for Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and has initiated exhibitions in Glasgow, Buenos Aires and Berlin.

Die irische Botschaft freut sich, im Rahmen der Cultúr Salon-Reihe, die small fields Ausstellungstour mit der Künstlerin Aleana Egan und der Kuratorin Melissa Canbaz zu präsentiertieren. Die Cultúr Salon-Reihe ermöglicht Einblicke in die irische Kultur und gilt vor allem dem Austausch von Ideen. Die small fields Ausstellung findet vom 8. Mai bis 20. Juni 2021 im Künstlerhaus Bremen statt.
In der small fields Ausstellung schafft Aleana Egan eine Kulisse abstrakter Skulpturen, die in vielschichtigen Konstellationen zusammengesetzt sind. Materialien wie Metall, Holz, Pigment und Stoff bleiben Ihren eigenen Merkmalen treu und sind dabei doch unbestimmt: In dieser Vieldeutigkeit rufen die Objekte immaterielle Momente hervor - Ideen, Gedanken, Gefühle, Stimmungen, Energien wie auch Beziehungen zueinander als auch im zwischenmenschlichen Kontext. In einer bestimmten Form manifestiert, ist das Innere nach außen gedreht. In skulpturalen Gesten übersetzt werden latente Anspielungen sichtbar und der prozessuale Charakter schiebt sich in den Fokus.
Der Ausstellungsrahmen ist ein einmalig geöffnetes Feld, das stets in Bewegung bleibt. Während seiner gesamten Laufzeit wird small fields von Beiträgen in Form von Postern begleitet, wodurch ein zusätzliches Dialogfeld entsteht. Die Affiche-Reihe befasst sich mit der Zaghaftigkeit der Skulpturen und streckt den physischen Ausstellungsraum durch Erweiterung in den öffentlichen Raum. Affiche bietet derweil Posterbeiträge von Mihaela Chiriac, Sofia Duchovny, Hella Gerlach, Manuela Leinhoß, Vera Palme, Kirsten Pieroth und Nora Schultz. Die Ausstellung wird von einer Publikation begleitet.
Über die Redner:
Aleana Egan (* 1979, Dublin, Irland) verwendet eine Vielzahl von Materialien, um skulpturale Gesten und Installationen zu schaffen, die die Form von schlanken, fließenden Werken und einer dichteren konzentrierten Konstellation von Formen annehmen können. Oft sind die Skulpturen ausdrucksstark und verwenden eine sparsame Materialsprache und künstlerische Technik. Diese Materialien wie verschiedene Metalle, Pappe, Beton, Holz, Pigmente und Stoffe werden in eine Praxis integriert, die sowohl von einem intuitiven als auch von einem intellektuellen Ort ausgeht und mit den Eigenschaften der Materialien spielt - wie sie sich krümmen, hängen oder durchhängen. In jüngerer Zeit bestehen Werke aus Bestandteilen, die jeweils eine soziale Beziehung zueinander eingehen. Melissa Canbaz ist Schriftstellerin und Kuratorin und lebt in Berlin. Derzeit ist sie Interimskuratorin des Künstlerhauses Bremen. Sie ist Mitbegründerin des Projektraums STATIONS in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Zuvor arbeitete sie für das Haus der Kulturen der Welt und initiierte Ausstellungen in Glasgow, Buenos Aires und Berlin.
