Science Café: Papua-New Guinea and the Secret of Anthropology

Native people in the rain forest of Papua New-Guinea and today´s migration crisis – what do they have in common? The internationally renowned anthropologist Martin Soukup describes surprising parallels in the stories of villagers pushed out of their homes 70 years ago and the 21st century society.

His focus lies on the impact of strong historical changes on people’s behaviour. This applies to migration and relationships to the homeland, but also to the boom of digital technologies, which has already found its place even in the rain forest of Papua New-Guinea. Three years ago, Mr. Soukup´s book „Anthropology and Melanesia” was awarded as the best monography of Charles University in Prague and in 2017 he won the Neuron Foundation´s Best Young scientists award.

Science Café is a series of popular science lectures by the best Czech scientists of today. It is organized by the Czech Centre Berlin and the Neuron Foundation.
