Seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt hat Mahama in seinen architektonischen Kunstwerken einen kritischen Blick auf die moderne\, globalisierte Welt offengelegt. Nun gibt er sein Wissen in zwei Re-Schoolings weiter und gibt den Zuschauer*innen eine Idee davon\, wie man anders und nachhaltig existieren kann. Ibrahim Mahama\, Künstler und Ko-Kurator von Existing Otherwise – For a New Politics of the Senses spricht über seine aktuelle Arbeit für dieses Projekt und auch die Vienna Biennial for Change 2021 “PLANET LOVE. Climate Care in the Digital Age”\, aber auch weiter Ausstellungen in Europa\, darunter “Congoville” im Middelheim Museum und “Vanishing Points 2014-19” in der Reiter Gallery\, Leipzig. Als Gründer wird er das Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art vorstellen\, ein von Künstler*innen geführter Projektraum im Tamale\, wo die abschließende Berlin-Tamale Ausstellung von “Existing Otherwise | Anders Existieren” im Januar 2022 eröffnet. Mahama kommt ins Gespräch mit Isabel Lewis\, Künstlerin und Ko-Kuratorin von Existing Otherwise und Gründerin The Institute for Embodied Creative Practises. Beide Künstler*innen werden über die von ihnen gegründeten Institutionen und ihre Praxis des Anders-Existierens sprechen. Die Veranstaltung wird moderiert von Solvej Helweg Ovesen. Durch die Pandemie sind viele physische\, räumliche und administrative Strukturen wie nie zuvor verfallen. Gebäude stehen leer\, Produktions- und Transportkreisläufe sind nicht mehr nutzbar. Daher müssen wir uns als Menschen an neue Lebensbedingungen anpassen und anders existieren – auch materiell. Dies ist ein Moment der Veränderung. Ibrahim Mahama verarbeitet in seiner künstlerischen und kuratorischen Praxis z.B. Bauwerke\, Baumaterialien sowie Technologie und Textilien um\, die als Sinnbild für die erschöpften ökonomischen und ökologischen Kreisläufe gelten. In den beiden Vorträgen wird er die materiellen Spuren (Transportsäcke\, Züge\, Fischkisten\, Flugzeuge usw.) dieser sich verändernden Zyklen präsentieren und erläutern\, wie er diese in der von ihm in Tamale gegründeten Kunstinstitution The Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) und Red Clay Studio umgenutzt hat. For more than a decade\, Mahama’s architectural artworks have revealed a critical view of the modern\, globalised world. Now he shares his knowledge in two re-schoolings\, giving viewers an idea of how to exist otherwise and sustainably. Join us in Berlin on Saturday\, 19 June at 5pm for the second re-schooling lecture with Ibrahim Mahama\, artist and co-curator of Existing Otherwise – For a New Politics of the Senses. In this lecture Mahama will speak about his current curatorial work for this project as well as for the Vienna Biennial for Change 2021 “PLANET LOVE. Climate Care in the Digital Age”\, but also about his running exhibitions in Europe amongst others “Congoville” at Middelheim Museum and “Vanishing Points 2014-19” at Reiter Gallery\, Leipzig. Finally\, and very importantly he\, as founder\, will introduce Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art\, an artist-run Art Centre in Tamale\, where the final Berlin-Tamale exhibition “Existing Otherwise | Anders Existieren” will take place\, January 2022. In this part of the presentation artist and co-curator of Existing Otherwise\, Isabel Lewis\, founder of The Institute for Embodied Creative Practises\, will join the conversation and both artists will speak about the institutions they founded and their agency of existing otherwise. The event is moderated by Solvej Helweg Ovesen. Due to the pandemic\, many physical\, spatial and administrative structures have deteriorated like never before. Buildings are abandoned\, production and transport circuits are no longer operational. Therefore\, as humans\, we have to adapt to new living conditions and exist otherwise – also in material terms. This is a moment of change. In his artistic and curatorial practice\, Ibrahim Mahama reworks buildings\, building materials as well as technology and textiles\, which are symbols of exhausted economic and ecological cycles. In the two lectures\, he will present the material traces (transport bags\, trains\, fish boxes\, aeroplanes) of these changing cycles and explain how he has repurposed them in the art institution he founded in Tamale\, The Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) and Red Clay Studio. The Re-schooling lecture takes place in the frame of “Existing Otherwise | Anders Existieren” (XO)\, an international art project of the communal Galerie Wedding-Space for Contemporary Art\, in collaboration with XO Curatorial Projects\, both in Berlin\, co-curated by Isabel Lewis\, Ibrahim Mahama and Solvej Helweg Ovesen (Artistic Director). “Existing Otherwise | Existing Otherwise” is realised in close partnership with The Institute for Creative Embodied Practices\, Callie’s\, Berlin\, and Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA)\, Tamale (Ghana).
