Seine fünf Kinder kommen am Sterbebett des Patriarchen zusammen. Auf mehreren hundert Seiten entwirft Oates »das tragikomische\, manchmal trostlose Porträt einer Familie und Nation« [The Guardian]. Im Gespräch mit dem Lyriker und Pulitzer-Preisträger Robert Hass [USA] gibt die Autorin Einblicke in Strategien und Einflüsse ihres Erzählens in einer sich wandelnden Welt mit ihren vielfältigen Herausforderungen.
